New Honors Parents: What You Need to Know

by Sofia Cicero ‘25

Sending your child off to college might be one of the most stressful times in a parent’s life. Having your child live in a different state than you is an understandably difficult adjustment. However, knowing that your child will be in a safe and caring environment definitely alleviates some of that stress. The safe and caring environment is located here right at One Pace Plaza: Pforzheimer Honors College.

One of the best things about honors is most definitely the immediate family bond that is created when any student joins. There will always be fellow honors students and faculty around to support them. Our honors advisors are so kind and genuinely concerned about how the students are doing academically, socially, and emotionally. For academic purposes, students meet with their assigned advisor once a semester to talk about the next semester’s class schedule. However, there are ample appointments available to help with any academic issues as well as any other support a student might need. All of our advisors are only an email away and are eagerly willing to help.

Honors students also get access to their own lounge. This is an honors exclusive space where any honors student can scan into the lounge with their PaceID and study, hang out with friends, or attend one of our many honors events throughout the semester. There are also multiple study rooms and conference rooms available for group study sessions or anything else one might need them for. Each of the rooms has a unique theme that makes them super fun (our Broadway and Harry Potter rooms are fan favorites)!

Lastly, our honors courses cover a wide variety of topics and interests that are both academically captivating and interesting. For example, one of the honors advisors teaches a course all about ancient Egypt and it fills up every semester. Some courses are honors exclusive, while others will still give you the required honors credit. The most interesting types of courses we offer for honors are interdisciplinary courses, which cover requirements for multiple classes. There are many honors courses that are built within an interdisciplinary course that will give you two classes worth of credits all rolled into one course. In the spring 2022 semester, there is a Hong Kong and Bollywood: Globalization of Asia course that combines a history class with a communications class. The list of courses is extensive and the courses are sure to keep any student engaged while having fun.
