Changing Your Major

A lot of pressure goes into selecting your major, especially when you find yourself either unsure or stuck between two options. Before applying to college, I heard from guidance counselors that a decent percentage of students end up changing their majors and that doing so is not a bad thing. After all, it doesn’t make sense to stay with something that makes you unhappy. Despite hearing that, I felt incredibly conflicted and overwhelmed when I noticed that I was more interested in courses offered within a different department. When those feelings arose, I decided to make an appointment with my former advisor, Dr. Shostya. At our meeting, she helped me organize my thoughts, resulting in the clarity that I needed to make a decision.

During our initial meeting Dr. Shostya got me in contact with Mohini, who advises numerous majors, one of them being psychology. From there we began discussing potential classes, requirements, as well as career goals. Mohini helped me with the paperwork associated with changing your major. It wasn’t hard to fill out, but it was comforting knowing that I was receiving help every step of the way and that I was not alone in what I thought would be a difficult and lengthy process. After a couple of days, my change of major request was signed off on, making me a psychology student!

If you are finding yourself not interested in your current major or you found a passion in another area, I recommend setting up a time to talk with your advisor. You don’t need to make any decisions during this initial meeting; you can simply use it as a chance to talk about your feelings or any concerns that you may be having. The Honors advisors are all amazing and they truly want what is best for you!
