I adopted a plant baby! Here’s all about Honors’ Plant Parenthood event

On March 24, Honors Advisory Board hosted a “Plant Parenthood” event in the Honors lounge, where Honors students got to take home either a vegetable plant, a flower plant, or a pre-potted succulent! Earlier in the week, they sent out a QR code where students got to choose which kind of plant they wanted to take home, which made me really excited about the event! I chose a pre-potted succulent since my dorm does not get enough natural light to nurture a flower or vegetable plant. I was appreciative that Honors provided us with many options, as everyone was able to adopt the plant that best matched their energy and lifestyle.

When I arrived at the Honors lounge on the big plant adoption day, I was greeted by cheerful Honors Advisory Board members and some amazing music to really set the vibe! On the main table, all the wonderful options were displayed for us to choose from. I immediately saw the succulent that called out to me, a beautiful soft green one that I named Betty! There were so many vegetable plant options, which included Swiss Rainbow Chard, Beef-Steak Tomato, Golden Squash, Imperator Carrots, and Brussel Sprouts. You planted these in terracotta posts with dirt already inside. For flowers, they had five different grow kits, which were Cactus, Poppy, Forget Me-Not, Sunflower, and Daisy. These came already as a set in their own mini terracotta pots. Then, you could make a birth certificate commemorating the day you adopted your plant baby.

You could decorate your pots with so many adorable stickers, (I chose a balloon dog) as well as with markers! Everyone looked like they were having a blast while decorating and bonding with their plant babies.

Adopting these plants was an incredibly heartwarming experience. Kelly Filipczuk commented that the “plant parenthood event was a lot fun! I felt welcomed, there was lots of good banter, nice music, plus some information to help us take care of our plants. I took home a purple succulent.”

Abby Leff has also enjoyed the event, and commented “I adopted my new succulent “Spacey” at Plant Parenthood! I got to water her and decorate her pot before taking her home to enjoy my windowsill.”

Almost all the plants had been adopted nearly halfway through the event; so many plants found their new homes. This event was an absolute blast! Thanks, Honors!
