Spring has sprung with Frequency A Cappella showcase! On April 14th at 8:00 p.m. in the Bianco Room, I got the chance to watch some incredibly talented vocalists and perform one of my favorite songs, The Greatest by Billie Eilish.
The Spring Showcase is an annual event hosted by Frequency A Cappella as a last hurrah for the season. Many of the solo performers are seniors, and this is a way of saying thank you and goodbye to college a cappella, which is very hard for the students graduating.
I’ve been a part of Frequency A Cappella since my first year. I started as an alto and I’m ending as an alto. I’ve had solos, I’ve been in duets, even trios. All the songs I have sung with this group hold a special place in my heart. However, the journey from where we came to where we are now demonstrates the immense work, dedication, and care that all Freqy members have put into the group.
I discovered Frequency from Pace University reposting a virtual open call flyer for the group. And I cannot thank myself enough for making that decision to send in a dorky tape of me singing a 32-bar cut of some musical theater song I liked at the time.
Thinking back on my first rehearsal and Frequency being the scared, timid freshman I was, all I wanted was an outlet to keep singing. Something that I love so much and did not want to give up entirely.
Frequency provided me with that outlet not only to sing but to express myself creatively. I met like-minded people studying different things, from musical theater to economics to neuroscience, all with one thing in common: the love of singing.
At my first Spring Showcase, I was too nervous to audition for a solo in the group number, and I didn’t sign up for any solo slots. I was mad at myself for getting too in my head and being nervous. I have sung hundreds of times in front of hundreds of people. Why was this different?
I think even then, I knew how much this group was going to mean to me. For my last Spring Showcase, I sang a rather depressing song, but it was also a fun one to sing. But most importantly, I got to sing with people I’ve grown the most with.
Even through the awkward bumps, twists, and turns, college takes you, from roommate troubles to friendships to dating, no matter where I was, I always knew I could come home to my Freqy family. I love you guys.
