Have you ever wanted the best of both worlds? As someone who is here at Pace for college, but originally from a small town in Pennsylvania, I have a very drastic change of scenery. While here in the city, I am surrounded by sky high buildings and bustling streets. But in my hometown, the skyscrapers are replaced by tall pine trees and quiet trails. Finding running spots at Pace to catch a break from the craziness of being a New York City college student is challenging, but not impossible, and I have found your next perfect running spot!
Sunset Park in Brooklyn, a short 25 minute train ride from campus, is the place to be. This park, specifically around the recreational center, is on a hill that overlooks the city skyline, giving you the most incredible view. In addition to the city skyline, the park is given it’s name because as the sun sets over the city, you get the most breathtaking view of natural park with a New York City Skyline in the back that is illuminated even more during peak sunset hour! The long and windy trails are perfect for long runs and you can’t beat that view during a workout! Additionally, Sunset Park tends to be much less crowded than other parks, allowing for a peaceful run without having to try and weave through groups of people.
After your run, there is much to do in the area around Sunset Park. Personally, I am one to spend most of my time in FIDI, so getting out into different parts of the city can be a great way to unwind from the stress of classes. There are bakeries, coffee shops, supply stores, dessert shops, and much more. The options are endless and not to mention, so much cheaper than in FIDI. Grabbing a friend to go on your run with you and exploring around the area is a great way to de–stress, exercise, and have a fun time!
As Winter comes to an end, getting to run outside is something college students can look forward to! The sun stays out later, the days get longer, and college students have more time to enjoy the day after a long schedule of classes. Whether that is a walk outside for a break from the craziness of the day or a run to get all the stress of the day out of your system, Sunset Park is a great option for an afternoon (or morning) outing.
