Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on the kind of person you are) no actual scandal has taken place here at Pace University. If the drama of scandals excites you though, you might want to consider checking out Scandal!, a one-act play premiering in Pace’s student center on April 22nd. It will premiere along with two other plays as a part of Setter Stage’s One-Act Play Festival. The following is an interview with the director of the show, Ethan Tierno, in which he tells us a little about the show and his surprise at it even getting produced.
Q: What is your name?
A: Ethan Tierno.
Q: What show are you directing for Setter Stage?
A: I am directing Scandal! With an exclamation mark. That part’s very important.
Q: That sounds intriguing. What’s Scandal! about?
A: It’s about the CEO of a film company and a scandal that arrives at his desk. He sort of has to right the ship and steer the company away from the scandal, but he doesn’t, and everything goes to hell.
Q: Have you written anything for theater before?
A: I have done some personal writing, but nothing that’s ever been produced. So this is the first thing I’ve written that’s being produced.
Q: Wow, that’s so exciting! Did you expect your play to get produced when you sent it in?
A: No. No, plain and simple. I thought of it as a fun writing exercise. You know like, “Oh, this’d be fun.” But I sent it in, I sent them an email, and they’re like, “Hey, we read your script and we love it, and we want to produce it, and please create slides – auditions are tomorrow, you have to be there.”
Q: Now, I’m going to ask you a question that you’ll probably hate, but what do you think made them pick your work? What do you think is so fun and likeable about your show?
A: I sent it at 8 p.m. on the due date. So, I think they were tired.
Q: What is the thing you’re most excited for people to see in Scandal!?
A: I love the chaos of my work. I really hope people get a laugh from it, because I just love making people laugh. So hopefully it works out.
Q: Who are your favorite characters?
A: Who are my favorite characters? Oh, that’s like picking your favorite child. Honestly, it might be Priscilla. She has this domineering energy. On the food chain of characters in the play, she is the highest.
Q: And can you tell us why your favorite cast member is Zachary Arrastia in the show?
A: Ethan couldn’t give any comment on this at the time. He didn’t want to hurt actor Victor Au’s feelings, who was still in the room with us.
Q: When and where can we see this show?
A: Oh! This show will be held April 22nd at 9pm in 1 Pace Plaza’s Student Center, along with two other exceptional plays as a part of the Setter Stage One-Act Play Festival.
Q: Thank you so much for your time. Do you have any final words to say to the people about Scandal!?
A: You should see it.
Nuff said, Ethan. Nuff said. Please come see Scandal! April 22nd at 9pm in 1 Pace Plaza’s Student Center, along with two other “exceptional” plays!
