It’s official: the snow is (probably?) gone! This week, we’ve experienced weather in the 60s and sunny, meaning life is looking up. If you’re like me, you struggle to see the positives during winter – something about the dreary weather and being stuck inside just dampens the spirit. Back home, Texans get a couple days of snow, maybe a week if we’re lucky. Other than that it’s a nice mix of sunny all the time with a sprinkle of catastrophic rainstorms. So, when I had geared up to head to class this week, I was pleasantly surprised to find I didn’t need a heavy-duty jacket anymore! Walking the streets with sunshine hitting my face reminded me of all the good things under the sun, and the importance of not taking the little things for granted. Anyways, enough of the self-discovery; I’m here to help you figure out the best way to shake off winter blues!
My new go-to: Exploring New Places on Citibikes
As an only child, I grew up with a mom taking NO chances…full padded protection for a bike ride down the street, and never walking the neighborhood alone. So, I had some hesitation before deciding to hop on a Citibike for a quick trip to Target. But when I began peddling down the street it was so freeing – I’ve basically become addicted. Another plus to living in the city: there’s always a bike lane, or at least people with experience driving around bike riders. Keep in mind, each minute is an average of 30 cents (depending on your choice of a classic bike or e-bike). Citibike has memberships for unlimited 45-minute classic rides (so non e-bike), some e-bike discounts, and more – but it will run you $18.33 per month. If you’re looking for a less-permanent alternative, you can also do the Day Pass for $25 and unlock any bike around the city and have free 30 minute classic bike rides. Well, I’m looking at the rates on my Citibike app – it’s obviously not actually free, but pretty cool because you can hop on and off throughout the day. Personally, I just pay the fee per minute and explore where I want or spice up my normal commute.
New Season, New Music
To approach this prompt a little differently, I wanted to share my new music (and old favorites) in one summer-prep playlist. These are some fun songs to get you ready for the sunshine, inspire you to get out of bed, and take some initiative in your life. Maybe it’s because I didn’t take the opportunity to see Suki Waterhouse that I’m yelling at you, but either way – get up! Of course, after the concert I missed I began listening to her music and loved it. Anyways…I’m not jealous at all! Side note: I’m not one of those people that curates a perfect listening order – just shuffle it.
Picnics and Quick Bites
Pretty much since settling into college life, my friends and I have longed to have a cute little aesthetic picnic. Yes, the kind with a nice blanket and a small stereo – maybe even do the wine-glass cake trend from last summer if we’re feeling fancy. Anyway, now that the weather is looking up, we’ve been exploring options around the city; the most intriguing option so far is Pebble Beach. After a quick search, I found that it has not only a beach area, but also a playground, an open lawn and terrace, and a dedicated picnic area. I have yet to visit, but stay tuned for a review and we can see if the pictures are as good as the true experience.
If you wanna stay more local, check out the taco place across from Cool Sips at Seaport. It’s sort of difficult to spot, but as an expert I can proudly say their street tacos are the real deal – it’s called Luchadores! Right now, after about 4 p.m. you can grab three tacos and a drink for about $15. Grab your food to go and head to the piers – take in the sunshine and let your mind wander as you enjoy some delicious tacos.
