Earlier this month, the Honors Advisory Board hosted a spirit week for the entire Honors student body. It consisted of dressing up as your zodiac sign, wearing your craziest socks, and your comfiest pajamas. Along with these fun dress-up days, the Board hosted exciting events for Honors students, such as the Crazy Sock Designing event.
For those of you who missed it, the Honors lounge welcomed students in with good music and fun people. Right in the middle of the lounge, the tie-dyeing was set up into stations. The first station was where you prepped your socks before dyeing. After putting some gloves on, you pick your socks and soak them in the soda ash mixture for five minutes to help bring out your colors. When your socks are done soaking, you ring them out and grab some rubber bands to create a crazy pattern. We learned a few different ways to tie a design to our socks, such as stripes, spirals, and circles. There were various colors to choose from, from purples and blues to reds and oranges, offering a ton of chances to make a crazy and funky sock design. Once your socks are all banded up, it’s time to dye.
Making these socks really gives you a sense of nostalgia; doing arts and crafts brings out the kid in everybody. Ashvin Kapoor, an Honors student, commented, “I’m really happy to be here at the Honors Advisory Board sock-making event. It just really gives a sense of community within the Honors program, and just like that, we can all be wearing crazy socks. And if we didn’t already have crazy socks, we have the opportunity to make them! Thanks, Honors.”
Many students shared that they felt relaxed and enjoyed having a cute little project that didn’t have a deadline. With midterms in progress and spring break just around the corner, it was apparent how many people appreciated the break while having a lovely time designing some crazy socks!
