Everyone, including myself, gets nervous when thinking about applying to their first internship. April and May is always a stressful time for students. You have to worry about finding an internship for the summer while also juggling finals. This spring, the Honors Advisory Board hosted an intern panel composed of honors students who’ve had some pretty cool internships and advice. Their internships ranged from cyber security, directing and production, accounting, consulting, healthcare, and publishing. Even though those topics are not necessarily related, there are some common themes that I learned that worked for the panelists across the board. Make sure to take advantage of the Honors College resources. You can ask your mentors, advisors, and friends questions about the process; being able to see what works and what doesn’t is very helpful. Following their advice helped me land my first internship!
I’ve included my favorite advice from the panel:
- Be yourself! Employers pick people who they want to work with.
- Take advantage of career services and Handshake! careerservices.pace.edu
- Network with your fellow honors students and professors. They might be able to point you to an internship or get you in the door.
- Do research on the company you are interviewing for.
- Include projects or activities completed in class on your resume, even if they seem “small.”
- Keep your head up, everything happens for a reason.
- Keep applying! The more you apply to it, the more opportunities you give yourself.
