As an Honors student, I must take one Honors course per semester. As I was looking through the wide array of Honors classes that the Honors College offered last semester, I saw that Dr. Welty was teaching a class called “The Artist as the Activist” and I knew I had to take it. The artist as the activist is a class where we examine the intersections between art and activism; it meets twice a week. The first class each week is based on theory and lecture/discussion and the second class of the week is focused on students sharing their art and discussing their art with one another. I have only been in this class for a month and a half at this point, but I am enjoying it so much. While I love the theory we learn, I adore the time we spend making and sharing art with each other. We ask each other questions about our art in a non-judgmental way; sharing my art with the class was an amazing experience. When I showed my art, everyone clapped and asked me questions about my work. This class has overall made me more confident about myself and my art. I absolutely love it!
