Mardi Gras Event

by Vanessa Wilson ’22

Last Tuesday, the Honors College hosted its first ever Mardi Gras Party. Mostly celebrated in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mardi Gras is a night full of festivities and feasting. Mardi Gras has been celebrated for hundreds of years. While the holiday is associated with Lent, anyone can celebrate Mardi Gras.

Whether you celebrated Mardi Gras as a last night of rich eating before Lent or you just wanted to have some fun, Honors provided something for everyone to enjoy. I enjoyed the food and the eye-mask decorating the most. There were cupcakes decorated in the classic Mardi Gras colors of purple, green, and gold. There was also King’s Cake, a traditional dessert for Mardi Gras. King’s Cake isn’t easy to get in New York City, so it was really special to have it at the event. The eye mask decorating was the main activity for the night, complete with paint, glitter, feathers, and gems to use as decorations. It was so fun to see everyone be creative.

Another fun aspect of this event was that semi-formal attire was encouraged. There haven’t been many formal events, so it was nice to try something new and it was exciting to see everyone dress up!

Overall, I had a good time at the Mardi Gras event. It was exciting to be a part of the Honors College first Mardi Gras party and I hope the tradition continues!
